5 Steps to Opening a Business

Have you always had a dream of being an entrepreneur and owning your own business? So many people do, but not many people actually act on their dream.

Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Records and Virgin Airlines, once had the brilliance to sell tickets for a non-existent airplane. Before he started Virgin Airlines, he wanted the dream to become a reality, but he didn’t know how he was going to purchase an airplane. So, he launched the company anyway without one.

And he was a success. He had to because we all know that Virgin Airlines exists. Steps to opening a business do not have to be hard. In fact, the only place you need to start is action.

Here are 5 steps to opening a business that will launch you into your target market with branding style, mindset and attract clients.

1. Plan It Out

Sit down right now and write your plan. It doesn’t have to be organized, just write it out. You can also dictate into a recorder what your plan is for your business. After you get this information out, you can go back and sort out the pieces to identify your niche, create action steps and figure out your marketing plan.

2. Write Your Materials

Part of the steps to opening a business include coming up with your business name and mission statement. These two items are probably the most important for starting your business. Your mission statement will keep you focused when you aren’t sure you remember what your intentions are as an entrepreneur. If you decide to write your own copywriting material, make sure you read the mission statement to remind yourself how you help others.

3. Register the Business

Registering a business is a huge step. You are putting yourself out there and letting yourself and the registration office know that you are opening a business. Figure out whether you want to operate as a sole proprietor for the first year or launch as a corporate entity. If you decide to incorporate, plan by having the right tax programs or are able to delegate this task to a tax preparer.

4. Create Realistic Goals

Creating goals for your business is an important step to opening a business. By creating goals, you set forth what you want to happen in the future operation for your business. Think about how you want the business to operate in a year from now or even three years from now. Write your goals in the present tense, as if you envision yourself there and the goals have happened. When you finish writing your goals, keep the paper nearby so you can repeat them frequently.

5. Delegate Tasks

Michael Gerber, author of The E-Myth, once said that, “business owners who operate as technicians in their business will never be successful.” What he means is that when you have so many things to do, you wear different hats and are not a master at anything. You can easily overcome this by delegating tasks even before you take steps to opening a business. Imagine a restaurant owner who cooked and cleaned all by himself. It’s the same business procedure.

Graphic designers, website developers, copywriters all exist to help you with tasks in your business to make it reach your target audience so you can do what you do best. Wearing too many hats will lead to burnout as you take steps to opening a business. How can you delegate tasks today?
