Create a blog and create tons of content related to your niche. You don’t (nor shouldnt) sell affiliate offers in every piece of content. Ideally, you want to aim for a content to promotion ration of 5:1. This is what Google is looking for. Always keep Google happy.
Be authentic — Whether you want to be a big voice for a particular niche or a solo blogger, you need to get comfortable with yourself. People like to connect with voices that have an authentic message.
Performance marketing is what it is. An industry that rewards the deserving and punishes the lazy, the unworthy, the bullshit mongers and the just plain wrong. It’s everything I wanted but couldn’t find in a 9-5.
The truth is much more complicated. It’s true that affiliate programs can be sources of phantom revenue and off-brand promotion. But managed properly, they can also make up 5-15 percent of online revenue and have an ROI among the highest of any online channel. CMOs are realizing that affiliate marketing can be an important part of their arsenal and are integrating the channel into their overall marketing strategies.
The easiest and most common way to start building an audience for a website is via social media. Depending on your niche and industry, you can choose from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and several other niche and location-specific networks. Building up an engaged and interested following on social media is a great opportunity to build relationships and once you have their trust, promote your products and services to them.
Today, I’m putting all that knowledge to work, and walking you through the foundations of the affiliate marketing space, what kinds of affiliate marketers exist today, and how you can get started with affiliate marketing.

The AID (ad ID) is a number which identifies a specific link and enables CJ to track creative performance as well as credit the publisher when they earn a commissionable transaction. Because each link has a unique AID, it also allows CJ to identify the appropriate advertiser.

I have started signing up for some affiliate programs and reading the fine print is over whelming! I have noticed that they are all very similar, but one thing I was wondering, after I become an affiliate, I cannot use my own link to order things? Is this correct? I want to post things that I actually use. I will not take advantage of this, but just want to check! Thank you so much for your blog, mine is a result of yours!
Run tactical and seasonal campaigns alongside your core commission structure to drive traffic and revenue e.g. offer a £100 cash bonus for the first affiliate to generate £500 revenue for your new product range.
There is so much work in affiliate marketing, therefore, you need to be patient before making money online. Traffic is driven to the website of the marketer through affiliate marketing programs but as the marketer you have the responsibility of creating and maintaining relationships with partners.
Finmax is a binary options broker that emphasizes on beginner traders. Finmax provides great trading signals, which makes the trading process look much easier and convenient. You can access the trading signals service in the ‘Instruments’ section on the official website.
Lately, coworking spaces are becoming more and more popular. Consider this idea: you can rent a desk at a space established just for people like you – for other freelancers. And if you’re a social butterfly, you are going to build new connections pretty fast.
newsletters – for those affiliates that require accounts to be created or email addresses to be captured newsletters are a strategic way for them to directly market affiliate offers. 6Groupon and 7Quidco for example are excellent at targeting their segmented database with the latest partner deals.
In the late 1990s and the early 2000s, affiliate marketers drove web traffic and sales to brands. These typically included publishers like coupons, cashback, content and loyalty sites. Measuring marketing performance was fairly standard, with brands tracking affiliate driven conversions and paying out commissions for the online sales driven by each individual affiliate. An example would be powerhouse publishers like ebates.com and fashion house Tommy Hilfiger or a specialized travel blogger and the hotelier Marriott. These types of relationships between marketers and affiliates were typically managed by affiliate networks which specialize in finding affiliates, tracking conversions and processing commissions.
Influencers, high profile leaders, and authors. ‘Influencer’ is a popular buzzword right now, and that space overlaps with affiliates more than you would initially think. Simply put, to earn big commissions in affiliate marketing you want to get the right product/service in front of the right audience with the right message. Influencers already have a strong audience, and are determined to continue to grow it into the millions, making them perfect for affiliate programs. For some time, the space has been very fixated on monetizing through general sponsorship for a one-time payment, however, an affiliate payout allows the influencer to earn ongoing revenue for as long as the content lives on. This can easily earn the right influencer 10x more in the long-term.
I’ve been doing affiliate marketing – successfully – for well over a decade. While I earn affiliate income from this website, I’ve made the bulk of my affiliate revenue from selling real users products and services – in multiple niches – that have nothing to do with the making money online niche. I’ve been nominated as Affiliate of the Year three times in the Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Awards – taking home the award in 2016. I’ve spent the last decade+ teaching people how to find success with affiliate marketing – based on my own experiences – as well as advocating for the industry as a whole. I’m often blunt and can sometimes be controversial, but I’m also 100% bullshit free.
Products are now put in a category. The commission will be based on the category each product has been placed in whether or not the category is correct. For instance, I had a sale for a child riding toy tractor. Instead of it being in toys category which would have only earned me 3%, it was actually placed in lawn and garden category which I then actually earned 8% instead.
Some people remember the 1990’s as a tremendous period of growth for grunge music and Jim Carrey films. While this is true, most people will probably tell you the 90’s were responsible for this big, beautiful, technology called the World Wide Web (aka the internet, the web, the vast digital ocean of information at our finger tips). And with any new technology or media, companies quickly realized they had a new opportunity to market their products and services to consumers via the millions of websites they visit every day.
Perhaps you’ve seen this before. You’re in a “learn online marketing” type forum. A person publishes a post complaining that they can’t make a dime online. But in their signature line they have something along the lines of “I Made 50 Million Dollars with This” followed by their affiliate link.
Additionally, advertisers who work with numerous types of software and third-party systems often find it useful to easily pass data streams across other systems. In a market where legacy investments are commonplace, compatibility is a core strength.
Figuring out which niche to target is the stumbling point for a lot of wannabe affiliates. As I mentioned in my post on how to research a niche, I’ve stumbled on some of my niches completely by chance – others I found and targeted. If you’re … Read More
Brands use data to understand conversion costs, channel and partner category performance and efficiency, profitability across promotions, products etc. These detailed analytics and actionable insights allow advertisers to better manage key partners, partner and product categories, campaigns and promotions, channels etc, driving higher revenues across more profitable products while increasing their operational efficiencies. Advertisers also use the performance data to design tiered reward systems, often based on metrics such as total conversions, premium conversions, booked or consumed conversions, etc.
You can even go one-step further by developing application that powers white-labelled interface for each partner (they usually love to see their logo and colors on the tool), then send signals to the e-commerce website to display custom pricing or content.
Compatible programs are those that have a similar audience and goals to you, but have complementary differences that will benefit both brands. Working with them can have two main benefits. Firstly, you can clearly expand your reach through your partner’s audience. Also, a program with established authority can extend that authority to you through association. If you’re unsure how to find a program to work with, take a look at these three tips:
There are a whole host of huge established websites that you probably don’t even realise operate on an affiliate marketing business model. Insurance is a popular product sold by some of these larger companies. Do you recognise either of the following:
Focus on what works, eliminate what doesn’t. The analytics provided by your company will tell you which types of ads are working and which ones aren’t. Use more of the ads that are working and eliminate the ones that aren’t.
Learn how to analyze data — Know how to use marketing tools and analyze performance data. Do the math to determine your marketing costs in order to bring traffic to your site, and calculate conversions and commissions to determine what’s performing best for you. Tweak copy or the location of a CTA to optimize success of the page. Study success for all of your highest performing pages, and try to lift conversions. A performance increase of just a couple of points could mean a big lift in sales.
It is fair to say that partnership marketing has been simply swept under the marketing rug. Read any marketing text book and you will find chapters on digital, social, strategy and branding, and amongst these you will notice the odd reference to brand synergies between two companies. However, search online and you will find articles, agencies, and job adverts on partnership marketing all under an array of titles; joint marketing, co-marketing, and merchant marketing.
Good news: Companies make it very easy to get links to their site. The way that you get those links varies from company to company, but it’s usually very easy to find a link to the product or products that you’re looking for.
If you want an even faster way to get your affiliate marketing set up, I recommend looking at one of our paid products, either AffiloBlueprint or AffiloJetpack. You can learn more about them here: http://www.affilorama.com/products
Hi Amy – thanks for explaining all of this! I have a food/cooking/recipe blog. Any idea of some affiliate networks to join that provide for this niche? The ones you listed don’t seem to fit. Or do people who have food blogs also join these types of networks you mentioned? I feel like it would make more sense for me to have affiliate links for cooking products or food related products. Let me know how I can go about finding affiliate networks that carry these types of products.
Charitable partnerships can take a number of forms, with various ways in which a brand and charity can run such campaigns. These include exhibitions, public events, award shows, sponsorship, raffle contributions and news stories.
Bringing this back to partnership marketing; when primary brands are looking for specific partners to promote their services, affiliation is seen as a very attractive option. It creates an alliance of brands in a very direct way towards a mutual target audience. LG for example, the popular TV manufacturer, will work closely with renowned TV review sites in order to drive sales. The review site will demonstrate the quality of the brand offering and effectively promote LG’s products to their database.
Some advertisers offer multi-tier programs that distribute commission into a hierarchical referral network of sign-ups and sub-partners. In practical terms, publisher “A” signs up to the program with an advertiser and gets rewarded for the agreed activity conducted by a referred visitor. If publisher “A” attracts publishers “B” and “C” to sign up for the same program using his sign-up code, all future activities performed by publishers “B” and “C” will result in additional commission (at a lower rate) for publisher “A”.
Affiliates can promote an advertiser using numerous techniques. Depending on the type of website, unique selling point (USP), and target audience they will promote those with the highest conversion and those offering the greatest commission rates. Promotional formats include:
The fact is, one brand can create appealing content, but by providing fresh material in conjunction with a partner suddenly makes it an entirely new proposition, one that is far more interesting, likeable and engaging. This will attract the attention of both customer bases and affiliated parties. All this means a much larger network that will interact and share it. From an SEO and social engagement perspective the benefits are vast.
So you now have a decent idea of how far affiliate marketing has come, and the kinds of challenges the industry has faced in the past, but do you know what affiliate marketers look like today? I’m pleased to say that the affiliate marketers of the current digital landscape are a diverse and vibrant group that include:
Rakuten LinkShare is considered to be one of the oldest affiliate partner networks, it is now a fair amount smaller than some of the bigger players in the affiliate industry. There are a few slick features of Rakuten LinkShare that differentiate this platform from the rest.
You are a big help to me. I just made my blog and started doing affiliate marketing however I am struggling on the next step. I don’t know how will make people buy through my blog. It’s frustrating you know. What you said lifted up my spirit and I wish I can see sales next month or so. Cheers!
Technology providers should build trust between brands and their marketing partners by affording both parties greater transparency on partner performance as well as on any commission adjustments advertisers make as a result. Such transparency can improve the relationships between advertisers and their partners by driving optimal partner marketing performance with a focus on maximising customer revenues across more profitable products.
Transparent relationships — If you would like to be privy to special offers, higher payouts, or start a relationship with one of your favorite advertisers, be transparent with them and about your methods.
In addition to providing accurate measurement, brands and their marketing partners trust the platform to calculate and transfer the commission earned by a partner. Brands need to know that they are accurately tracking their partners’ campaign performance and adjusting their commissions accordingly, while partners must be able to depend on reliable financial rewards in currencies they can actually use.
That’s my goal – to show you how to get thanked for your recommendations, which means a person is likely to take you up on further recommendations you make down the road. File-Sharing: Web sites that host directories of music, movies, games and other software. Users upload content to file-hosting sites and then post descriptions of the material and their download links on directory sites. Uploaders are paid by the file-hosting sites based on the number of times their files are downloaded. The file-hosting sites sell premium download access to the files to the general public. The websites that host the directory services sell advertising and do not host the files themselves.
Along with that, Amazon is a complete SELLING MACHINE! What I mean by that, is they have drilled their conversion rates down to the last detail. Typically I can convert traffic I send to Amazon from my affiliate sites around 12%. The reason why it works so well is that the moment people land on Amazon, they are automatically switched into “buyer mode”. Meaning, they know the only thing left for them to do is BUY. What that means, is all you have to do is get people to Amazon’s site, and they literally do the selling for you.
Great question. I’ve never used plugins for affiliate links (I tend to keep my plugin use as light as possible). I do keep a spreadsheet that makes pasting in my affiliate links quite simple though, even though it requires an extra step. I wrote about it here.
Link sharing – the primary brand creates the content but works in partnership with a secondary to promote it. Link sharing means linking to the partner’s content from their own site. This provides exposure, aligns both brands together, and advances SEO.
When visitors clicked on the associate’s website to go to Amazon and purchase a book, the associate received a commission. Amazon was not the first merchant to offer an affiliate program, but its program was the first to become widely known and serve as a model for subsequent programs.
Use your web analytics, not just affiliate reports – dive into the detail of how affiliate traffic performs in comparison to other digital channels and look at how you can improve your website to drive conversion
That said, if I signed up for classes online and were given a landing page of the exact books I needed for my classes, that would have saved me the enormous hassle of trying to find the books, the time spent waiting and the pain of having to take the bus across town to the other bookstore thanks to the typical out-of-stock-issues.
The website an affiliate owns contains details (or reviews) about a product sold on the advertiser’s website. It also links to the advertiser’s product page via a special link, known as an affiliate link.
Absolutely. Affiliate marketing is a viable and legitimate way to monetize your blog or website. Tens of thousands of merchants run affiliate programs and will pay you a commission for sending them sales. However, there are some scams centered around affiliate marketing. You’ll find information on how to spot affiliate scams – and avoid them – here.
