You partner with the company that sells a product or service you’d like to recommend. As their partner, you are their affiliate (sometimes referred to as an associate, partner, internet marketer or affiliate marketer).
The evolution of websites has now reached the point where each page should ultimately evoke an action to convert viewers into paying customers. This means the greater numbers to a site the better chance of conversions and therefore revenues. This is the reason millions are spent climbing the ladder of Google’s rankings.
CPA and affiliate marketing campaigns are publisher-centric. Advertisers cede control over where their brand will appear, as publishers browse offers and pick which to run on their websites. Advertisers generally do not know where their offer is running.
Too many people start out in affiliate marketing with crazy ambitions such as dreaming they will earn £20,000 in their first year and be able to quit their job after 12 months. While it’s technically possible for this to happen, it’s not typical.
Better data and more sophisticated technology are shaping the digital partner marketing industry. However, a lack of transparency into program performance, coupled with outdated performance-based models and technology solutions that many advertisers continue to work with, can force even the most seasoned advertisers to stagnate.
If an affiliate’s website is generic, such as a health and beauty blog, the possibilities are endless: from beauty creams to entire pampering sets, if you can give a company enough exposure, they will be begging you to trial their products for free!
Building an engagement or following is mostly done through social media. The first step is having a Facebook page or a Twitter account of your website so you can share new posts and other relevant info to others.

To sum it all up, making your first affiliate commission requires a bit of work but if you break it all down and follow it step by step, it won’t seem so overwhelming at all. Here’s a quick recap of what you need to do:
The phrase, “Affiliates are an extended sales force for your business”, which is often used to explain affiliate marketing, is not completely accurate. The primary difference between the two is that affiliate marketers provide little if any influence on a possible prospect in the conversion process once that prospect is directed to the advertiser’s website. The sales team of the advertiser, however, does have the control and influence up to the point where the prospect either a) signs the contract, or b) completes the purchase.
Affiliate marketing currently lacks industry standards for training and certification. There are some training courses and seminars that result in certifications; however, the acceptance of such certifications is mostly due to the reputation of the individual or company issuing the certification. Affiliate marketing is not commonly taught in universities, and only a few college instructors work with Internet marketers to introduce the subject to students majoring in marketing.
Google Adwords can be used to drive targeted traffic to a sales page. You simply make an ad in your adwords account then use your affiliate link in the target page URL of the ad. Obviously, you will have to continuously measure the conversions and see if the campaign cost is less than the campaign profit in order to keep the campaign running but I am sure you get the idea.
It’s easy to see how this can add up to some pretty impressive earnings. Some of our top affiliates earn in excess of $8000 per week! Who needs to be Walter White when you can earn this much legitimately, online, from anywhere in the world?
As an affiliate marketer, you become an independent promoter of a chosen product or range of products from a selected niche, on behalf of the vendors. Being an affiliate publisher means having absolute freedom to build your online presence. It’s your independent call on when or where your job gets done, how you reach your customers and optimize the whole marketing process. Sounds good? I bet it does.
There is so much work in affiliate marketing, therefore, you need to be patient before making money online. Traffic is driven to the website of the marketer through affiliate marketing programs but as the marketer you have the responsibility of creating and maintaining relationships with partners.
Expand your business. Your business is likely to do one of two things: expand or contract. That’s why you should always be striving for growth, otherwise your business will shrink and provide you with diminishing returns.
I personally prefer to do it that way–you can create a more convincing review that’s more likely to make sales. It’s not always possible or practical, though; for example, would you break up with your significant other just to test a product for getting your ex back? 😉 In cases like that, or if the product is expensive, it’s usually best just to use the vendor’s affiliate resources instead.
Your ongoing work as an affiliate marketer will be to repeat steps 4 – 6 on a continual basis. Building a site up to a point where it can make you consistent income takes a bit of work and you must be willing to constantly create, promote, market, innovate and of course, sell.
However, more recent examples exist of “thin” affiliate sites that are using the affiliate marketing model to create value for Consumers by offering them a service. These thin content service Affiliates fall into three categories:
Bundling – including your partners offering as an in-box bundle or package insertion, such as giveaways in packaging, promotion within the product itself or online bundle for a purchase such as buy-one-get-one-free.
I only recommend products as an affiliate that I’m extremely very familiar with—preferably products that I’ve used before and have helped me achieve something. If I’m not confident in the product and I don’t feel it will positively help people, I will not promote it.
I must commend you for this very useful article. I have been searching for tips on affiliate marketing to find out if it is a source genuine online business, or something fraudulent. Thanks for the encouragement.
I’ve just finished setting up an amazon affiliate site that’s about art supplies (I don’t mind giving out the niche – take it, it’s easy pickings) because the items are usually not expensive, and bought with other related items. This is helping raise my commision percentage at the start of the month.
Once you are cleared to promote a particular product and you understand the terms for that campaign, you look through the list of available buttons, banners, text links, etc. for that product. You choose the one that you like most and copy the code they provide for you. This code has your unique ID in it. Use this link when promoting the product.
Steep Learning Curve. While the reporting capabilities are great, they’re also quite difficult for beginners to get to grips with. You’ll need to spend time in the dashboard before you’re comfortable navigating the reporting suite and can then start to take full advantage of the tools on offer.
In affiliate marketing, one task that cookies manage is to remember the link or ad the visitor to a website clicks on. Cookies can also store the date and time of the click, they can even be used to remember what kind of websites or content you like most. There are many different types of web cookies and uses, but the kind of cookie affiliate marketing relies on is called a first-party cookie.
Although affiliate marketing has proven itself as a viable customer acquisition channel, to this day I still encounter individuals that react to the word “affiliate” like it’s a dirty word. I completely understand given some of it’s shadier history.
I recommend using ppc ads in the beginning in addition to keyword research as a way to test keywords and sales pages. Just keep things ultra low budget, i,e, $5 per day max until you really know what your doing or you could lose your shirt.
Most affiliate programs will give you basic stats that you may need but there is nothing stopping you from using your own conversion tracking software too. There are many conversions tracking sofware out there that you can use to track your affiliate campaign.
*Yes: As you may have guessed, the link above is my two-tier affiliate link. There are a few of these links on this site to pay me a small commission and allow me to keep this site free instead of a monthly membership site. Using my two-tier affiliate link will not affect the amount of commission paid to you with this or any other program. My commissions are paid out of the vendor’s cut, not yours. Please use this link to ensure I can keep this affiliate resource website free and updated weekly. Thanks!
The merchant is the person or company that creates and owns the product. Now it’s up to the merchant to work their magic and get that person to buy. If the person does decide to purchase, then the affiliate that sent them to the site earns a commission, which is a percentage of the product’s sale price. Easy, right?
Prepare for taxes. If you make money via affiliate marketing, you can be sure that you’re going to have to pay taxes on that income. At the beginning of each year, your partner companies should send you a 1099 tax form. If they don’t, you’re still required to report the income to the IRS.
The Performance Report provides data and graphs regarding your campaigns, programs, categories, and tools. The metrics you’ll find in the Performance Report include clicks, items ordered, and earnings.

Athletes are an easy example. It’s highly unlikely that a professional athlete – or even a popular fitness instructor with a large social following – would join an affiliate network or a SaaS platform’s marketplace. But brands partner with both types of athletes all the time and pay them for their influence and endorsements.
