Should Internet Marketers Use Pseudonyms?
While men and women within the Internet Marketing field love Internet Marketing for the possibilities it provides, it is also painfully obvious that people who do not work in this sector tend to view it through a highly critical eye. There are however a lot of misconceptions floating around in relation to Internet Marketing and, frankly, the internet in general. The individuals who operate within it and understand how excellent it is but it still poses a unique problem: do you want to be judged for it in your “regular” life?
Lots of people who make money online do so simply by using a pseudonym. They think up fake names for themselves because they would like to be sure that their IM life stays separate from everything else, particularly when they only do IM part time. Many newer and also part time Online marketers are worried about becoming identified by their employers and family or friends. Obviously, even if you don’t care about this kind of thing it is still important: should you choose a pseudonym for the work you do online?
Pseudonyms carry with them many benefits. The biggest benefit, not surprisingly, is being able to make an identity separate from your personal life and making it easier to keep the two from running into them. People who operate in particularly strict or strenuous fields or who are surrounded by those who view the Internet as a sketchy place benefit from using a pseudonym because it protects them from judgment.
If you want to work within a number of different niches, using a pseudonym will help you be able to do that. This way you will be able to construct expert level reputations for yourself in a variety of fields without having to worry that people think you are only a dabbler. You don’t have to be worried about a person saying “but what about the conflicting market that you are also selling in?” because you’ll be doing that selling under a different name?
Sadly, however, one of the bigger reasons that folks do IM business under a pseudonym is that they are trying to evade the responsibilities that come with running a business, like paying taxes. If none of the business is done under their legitimate name, then they believe that they shouldn’t have to worry about the money they make being reported to the IRS. It is very important that you do not fall for this flawed logic. Even if you do business under a different name the cash will still be seen as income and you’ll be held responsible for it. Further, the IRS will find those people, as those who endeavor to cheat the system usually get found out.
Whether or not you choose to use a pseudonym is admittedly up to you. For a lot of people it is just simpler to have one name for their daily offline life and another for their online ventures. Other individuals like keeping things under their legal names because doing so is just easier.
