SIP VoIP – A Simplified Explanation

SIP VoIP actually means Session Internet Protocol Voice-over Internet Protocol. And no matter how many times you read it over and over, you will still not understand it unless you are a technologically inclined person. So, to an average person who doesn’t have a degree on any computer-related study at all, how will you be able to understand what SIP VoIP is?

First of all, SIP is a technology introduced to improve the system of telephones all over the world. But in order for you to be able to enjoy this technology, you must have a provider that would give you the SIP service that you need. SIP trunking is what it’s called when a particular normal telephone system gets connected to the internet, which makes it completely SIP-enabled. And when I say the internet, it is the same place where your favorite websites are located.

So instead of working on the typical telephone lines, a SIP VoIP enabled system transfers data and signals through the internet. What then replaces the regular telephone number or the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) number is an IP address. So if ever you have a SIP VoIP enabled telephone system and you decide to call another SIP enabled system from a distant location, you will just have to connect through its IP address and nothing more. But will it be possible for you to still be able to call a normal (PSTN) phone number? Of course, your SIP network will just ahve to modify your IP so that it will become a PSTN number itself.

Then again, those are just the specifications. How can you really benefit from this SIP VoIP technology as opposed to if you use a normal telephone system? The advantages of using this system lies solely on the advantages of the internet. For example, you will be able to eliminate possible long distance phone call charges because the internet does not really apply this. Now, do you at least get the basics of SIP VoIP?
