"One vitalizing effect of the Internet has been connecting small, even ‘micro’ businesses to potential buyers" across the U.S., Etsy CEO Josh Silverman said in a blog post on the crafts marketplace's website. "People starting a business selling their embroidered pillowcases or carved decoys can offer their wares throughout the country — but probably not if they have to figure out the tax due on every sale.”
Word of mouth communications and peer-to-peer dialogue often have a greater effect on customers, since they are not sent directly from the company and are therefore not planned. Customers are more likely to trust other customers’ experiences. Examples can be that social media users share food products and meal experiences highlighting certain brands and franchises. This was noted in a study on Instagram, where researchers observed that adolescent Instagram users' posted images of food-related experiences within their social networks, providing free advertising for the products.
To the great disappointment of many small business owners and supporters of federalism, the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Wayfair v. South Dakota opened the door for states to impose an internet sales tax, even on businesses that have no physical presence in their borders. Because Congress has the constitutional authority to regulate interstate commerce, it is now considering ways to address this newfound taxing authority. Congress must take this opportunity to use its power to protect small businesses from these taxes and perhaps to at least work to slow the process down while a long term solution is explored. The strength of the American economy depends on it.
(a) Requirement to File Tax Return. An Internet vendor subject to 830 CMR 64H.1.7(3) must file a tax return in the form and manner prescribed by the Commissioner and pay the tax due for each calendar month on or before the 20th day of the following calendar month, whether or not the vendor must collect any other local or state excises. Your Brand Persona and Target Audience. When you eventually start creating content, you have to know who you’re talking to and tailor your brand voice to appeal to them uniquely. If you aren’t targeting the right audience (those people who will lean in to hear what you’re saying), you won’t find success. And, if you can’t find a way to stand out, you’ll blend into the hordes of other brands competing for attention in your industry.
