An omni-channel approach not only benefits consumers but also benefits business bottom line: Research suggests that customers spend more than double when purchasing through an omni-channel retailer as opposed to a single-channel retailer, and are often more loyal. On June 21, 2018, the United States Supreme Court fundamentally changed the rules for collection of sales tax by Internet-based retailers. In its decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., the Court effectively stated that individual states can require online sellers to collect state sales tax on their sales. This ruling overturns the Court’s 1992 decision in Quill Corporation v. North Dakota. The Quill case prohibited states from requiring a business to collect sales tax unless the business had a physical presence in the state.
Even so, not everyone is thrilled. "As a small-business owner, the ruling signifies additional risk, uncertainty, cost, and a likely chill on small to mid-size e-commerce business formation, growth, and hiring," says Stephen Culp, the founder and chairman of Smart Furniture. The Chattanooga-based online furniture retailer declined to disclose its annual revenue, though it notes that sales are in the tens of millions, with fewer than 50 full-time employees.
E-commerce markets are growing at noticeable rates. The online market is expected to grow by 56% in 2015–2020. In 2017, retail e-commerce sales worldwide amounted to 2.3 trillion US dollars and e-retail revenues are projected to grow to 4.88 trillion US dollars in 2021[63]. Traditional markets are only expected 2% growth during the same time. Brick and mortar retailers are struggling because of online retailer's ability to offer lower prices and higher efficiency. Many larger retailers are able to maintain a presence offline and online by linking physical and online offerings.[64][65]
For the most part, the 6-figure, 7-figure, and 8-figure-earners and up are making a large majority of their income by scaling out offers that they control. If you're just starting out, that avenue isn't for you. It only comes over time as you come to understand the field. As Sharpe says, most people first need to get a lay of the land and cruise through the virtual sales landscape before they dive into a massive undertaking like creating their own digital products and sales funnels.

The first hurdle for online retailers is determining whether or not they’re even capable of scaling their finance and tax departments to collect this tax. All told, there are more than 15,000 different taxing jurisdictions in the U.S., consisting of labyrinthine mix of city, county, federal and state-level taxes, many of which apply different rates to different categories of products and can vary based on what side of the street a customer lives on.
None of them ever passed, though. With the Supreme Court stepping into the fray on the Wayfair decision, it’s unlikely the federal government will be too anxious to dive back into this issue anytime soon. That said, as states get increasingly aggressive in their sales tax collection strategies, legal experts expect a long road of litigation and legislative changes ahead. That could provoke federal lawmakers to get involved.
