Online reviews, then, have become another form of internet marketing that small businesses can't afford to ignore. While many small businesses think that they can't do anything about online reviews, that's not true. Just by actively encouraging customers to post reviews about their experience small businesses can weight online reviews positively. Sixty-eight percent of consumers left a local business review when asked. So assuming a business's products or services are not subpar, unfair negative reviews will get buried by reviews by happier customers.

Among the specific evidence presented by the court? Less than 2% of Americans had internet access in 1992, compared with about 89% today. Last year, e-commerce sales alone totaled $454 billion. When combined with traditional catalog and other “remote” sales, that figure topped half a trillion dollars. What’s more, since the Department of Commerce first began tracking online sales, e-commerce has surged tenfold, to nearly 9% of total U.S. retail sales, from just 0.8% — a number that will likely become larger with online sales growing at four times the rate of brick-and-mortar retail.

However, before learning any of that, it's important that you get a lay of the land, so to speak. If you truly want to understand the field of internet marketing, Sharpe has some very good points. In essence there are four overall steps to really understanding internet marketing and leveraging the industry to make money online. Depending on where you are with your education, you'll be somewhere along the lines of these four steps.

A fulfillment center is a location, generally a warehouse facility, where orders for tangible personal property are received, packaged, and picked up by common carrier for shipment to the customer. Some sellers use their own fulfillment centers to fulfill all of their orders, including orders processed by marketplace operators. Other sellers contract with a third-party that operates a fulfillment center (fulfillment center operator) to fulfill their orders. Internationally there is the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN), which was formed in 1991 from an informal network of government customer fair trade organisations. The purpose was stated as being to find ways of co-operating on tackling consumer problems connected with cross-border transactions in both goods and services, and to help ensure exchanges of information among the participants for mutual benefit and understanding. From this came Econsumer.gov, an ICPEN initiative since April 2001. It is a portal to report complaints about online and related transactions with foreign companies.

Recent research clearly indicates that electronic commerce, commonly referred to as e-commerce, presently shapes the manner in which people shop for products. The GCC countries have a rapidly growing market and characterized by a population that becomes wealthier (Yuldashev). As such, retailers have launched Arabic-language websites as a means to target this population. Secondly, there are predictions of increased mobile purchases and an expanding internet audience (Yuldashev). The growth and development of the two aspects make the GCC countries to become larger players in the electronic commerce market with time progress. Specifically, research shows that e-commerce market is expected to grow to over $20 billion by the year 2020 among these GCC countries (Yuldashev). The e-commerce market has also gained much popularity among the western countries, and in particular Europe and the U.S. These countries have been highly characterized with consumer-packaged-goods (CPG) (Geisler, 34). However, trends show that there are future signs of a reverse. Similar to the GCC countries, there has been increased purchase of goods and services in online channels rather than offline channels. Activist investors are trying hard to consolidate and slash their overall cost and the governments in western countries continue to impose more regulation on CPG manufacturers (Geisler, 36). In these senses, CPG investors are being forced to adapt e-commerce as it is effective as a well as a means for them to thrive.


Several states have crafted internet sales tax legislation, which has produced lawsuits by online sellers like Wayfair and Overstock. As a test case, South Dakota has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit the Quill case. Specifically, S. Dakota asked  the U.S. Supreme Court "to overrule Quill’s physical-presence requirement which currently prevents the State from requiring out-of-state retailers to remit taxes for sales made within South Dakota."
Ultimately, most seem to agree that a sweeping, federal law regarding internet sales tax is necessary to ease the burden on retailers large and small. "This [issue] is crying out for Congressional attention," adds Mittelstadt. And in a statement last month, Etsy CEO Josh Silverman said: "We believe there is now a call to action for Congress to create a simple, fair, federal solution for micro-businesses."

There's a wild card, however: More than half of the units sold on Amazon worldwide last year came from third-party sellers, including many small- and medium-sized merchants. David Fildes, head of Amazon’s investor relations, said in its most recent earnings call in April that Amazon collects taxes on behalf of third-party sellers in Washington and Pennsylvania (per those states' rules). “We're not opposed to collecting sales tax” within a system that’s both “simple and applied evenhandedly,” he said.


Marketing managers need to be conversant in every element of a marketing campaign, and considering the importance of an Internet presence in any marketing plan today, this means having a clear understanding of Internet marketing from start to finish. Internet usage around the world, especially in the wealthiest countries, has steadily risen over the past decade and it shows no signs of slowing. According to a report by the Internet trend investment firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, 245 million people in the United States were online as of 2011, and 15 million people connected for the first time that year. (b)  in any of the following activities with respect to the vendor’s products:  1. payment processing services; 2. fulfillment or storage services; 3. listing products for sale; 4. setting prices; 5. branding sales as those of the marketplace facilitator; 6. order taking;  7. advertising or promotion; or 8. providing customer service or accepting or assisting with returns or exchanges.
I also received the 2 of the exact same recorded voice message. The one on 9/20/18 (213-568-4114, left a website address as amazonprofits.org. The 2nd one, the same recorded message (same voice, etc), came from phone number 850-842-5658, and website address left to contact or shop at was shoppersweb.org. I did not try them until recently due to a job loss. So here about 3 weeks later, although I figured they were scams, I tried to check into them. When I tried to check out either one of those websites, I was sent to a website that sold website domains. Interesting - doesn't sound like they keep the website very long either.
The Wayfair ruling paves the way for states to reach outside of their own borders when they collect taxes. This means that a small business in Texas with just a handful of single customers in New Jersey may soon have to comply with the Garden State’s taxes — and many small business owners regard this development with concern.   The fear for many of us is that the power to tax outside of state’s border will only be the beginning, and will be followed by the power to regulate businesses outside their jurisdiction.

Non-profit corporations and political entities use Internet marketing to raise awareness about the issues they address and engage individuals in their campaigns. They strongly favor social networking platforms because they are more personal than websites and they are easy to share, increasing the “viral” word-of-mouth effect that is so prevalent in online media.
A key benefit of using online channels for marketing a business or product is the ability to measure the impact of any given channel, as well as how visitors acquired through different channels interact with a website or landing page experience. Of the visitors that convert into paying customers, further analysis can be done to determine which channels are most effective at acquiring valuable customers.
So be wary. Ensure that you learn from the pros and don't get sucked into every offer that you see. Follow the reputable people online. It's easy to distinguish those that fill you with hype and those that are actually out there for your benefit. Look to add value along the way and you'll succeed. You might find it frustrating at the outset. Everyone does. But massive amounts of income await those that stick it out and see things through.

The 5-4 vote overturned this ruling, citing companies like Newegg, Wayfair, and Overstock in the Supreme Court decision, stating that “each easily meets the minimum sales or transactions requirement of the Act, but none collects South Dakota sales tax.” Amazon began voluntarily collecting taxes in the 45 states that require it last year, but only on items from its own inventory, meaning sellers on Amazon Marketplace may be impacted by this ruling.
“For years, brick-and-mortar retailers have suffered at the hands of online sellers, not only from whatever superior service or features are offered by the online sellers, but by the tax exemption they enjoyed under previous law,” he said. “This decision corrects that. If online sellers provide a superior product, that’s the nature of competition, but they should not enjoy a legislated advantage in the tax code.”

I wanted to update you on the Internet Profit scam. a) I received this “scam” notification via a phone call, voice mail message that sounds fairly legit, which could suck people in, b) they are using Amazon.com to try to “legitimize” their scam, and c) they also are using a .org address in their link to further make people feel that this scam is real. Buyer beware. It’s easy to be received, they are using all the tricks.

One small business owner Chad White, the owner of Class-Tech Cars, a Virginia-based small business that sells reproduction automotive parts online, recently testified before Congress that he has a part-time employee who — before the Wayfair decision — was able to collect and remit all applicable sales taxes in just a few hours each week. However, White said the ruling in the case “gives me, and millions of small businesses across the country, pause as we consider what lies ahead for Internet-enabled entrepreneurs.”
One of the earliest adopters of Internet marketing in the world of Fortune 500 companies was the Coca-Cola Corporation. Today, this huge purveyor of soft drinks has one of the strongest online portfolios in the world. More than 12,000 websites link to the Coca-Cola homepage, which itself is a stunning display of Internet savvy. Their homepage alone sports an auto-updating social network column, an embedded video, a unique piece of advertising art, frequently rotating copy, an opt-in user registration tab, tie-in branding with pop culture properties, and even a link to the company's career opportunities page. Despite how busy that sounds, the Coca-Cola homepage is clean and easy to read. It is a triumph of Internet marketing for its confidence, personality, and professionalism.

The development of digital marketing is inseparable from technology development. One of the key points in the start of was in 1971, where Ray Tomlinson sent the very first email and his technology set the platform to allow people to send and receive files through different machines [8]. In the 1980s, the storage capacity of computer was already big enough to store huge volumes of customer information. (b)   Prior Tax Periods. An Internet vendor may have engaged in in-state contacts other than as referenced in 830 CMR 64H.1.7(1)(b)2.a. through c. during tax periods prior to September 22, 2017.  In these cases, the vendor is liable for tax for such prior tax periods if:  1. the contacts created sales or use tax jurisdiction and; 2. the vendor did not collect and remit the tax.  For example, for purposes of illustration only, an Internet vendor with a principal place of business located outside Massachusetts may have previously:  a. owned or maintained inventory or other property in the state; or  b. contracted with an in-state representative (including a related person) other than as referenced in 830 CMR 64H.1.7(1)(b)2.a. through c., and thereby created state sales or use tax jurisdiction.  In these cases, the Internet vendor would have been subject to tax on all of its Massachusetts sales for the tax periods in question.  Such a vendor may seek to use the Department of Revenue’s voluntary disclosure program for such prior periods.
